The Faculty of Philology was founded in 1991 as a subdivision of the South-West University “Neofit Rilski” and there was considerable extension of the faculty’s activities ever since then. Today, it offers all levels of undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The Faculty’s objectives are to supply students with good communication skills and knowledge in the various literature, linguistic and culture disciplines through high quality teaching and research, to advance the knowledge and understanding of the languages and cultures of different countries of the world and to encourage professional developments of staff through research and best practices. The researchers’ work is committed to the empirical, historica, and theoretical study of linguistic structures with the a broad linguistic, cultural, and cognitive context. 

The degree of courses provided by the Faculty have been designed to allow students a considerable amount of freedom with regards to their choice of subject matter from plenty of materials available. Teaching is based on research. A research-based curriculum demands a critical approach to the material, to the methodologies and theories employed, and to the interactions between these elements .

The training corresponds to the state requirements and gives opportunity to students to continue their education in other European countries or in the USA. 

Research activities are directed to the exploration of different linguistic phenomena, works of literature and to increase knowledge of issue of cross-cultural communication. 

The faculty is recognized as an innovator in the implementation of current educational trends in the preparation of future philologists and in the creation of a European space for higher education. It trains students both from the region and from all over Bulgaria and many foreign students, including from China and Japan. Languages ​​taught are: English, German, French, Greek, Russian, Serbian, Croatian, Slovenian, Turkish, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese.
